The Roses of Love Project: From Start to Neverland

The Roses of Love fan-project began when longtime fan, Zori Krasteva of Bulgaria, wanted to bring a smile to Michael Jackson’s face. Many fans have noted, as Zori did, that although Michael smiles almost everyday for the fans and cameras on his way into court, it is not, understandably, the same, big, beautiful smile fans are used to seeing. In addition, the media seems to take pleasure in fabricating a story each day that there are “only” a “handful” of fans to support Michael. In truth there are over 50 fans on “slower” days and usually more; a big number considering the remoteness of Santa Maria, the length of the trial, and other difficulties! Zori, like many fans, wants to be in Santa Maria everyday to support Michael, but cannot be there due to financial and educational reasons, as well as difficulties getting a visa for the United States. She wanted to send a heartfelt present to Michael to convey her support and more importantly, her love; roses, an international symbol of love, were a natural choice. As she spoke with fellow fans, she realized that many people were looking for ways to support their hero, who has always shown so much love and generosity not only for his fans, but also for the entire world.

Soon, Zori and friends were spreading the idea all over the internet. They posted the idea that each interested fan could donate money for a single rose, to be delivered to Michael, with the purpose of demonstrating to him that there are MANY fans all over the WORLD who love, support, and keep him in their hearts, thoughts, and prayers each day, especially as he goes through this difficult time. For Zori, the most important feeling to convey to Michael was love; these roses were not sent simply because of the trial, but because of the pure love and appreciation fans feel for him. Importantly, this event was not sponsored by any specific fanclub; the word was put out on as many fansites as possible. And dedicated fans from all parts of the world responded rapidly!

From conception to presentation, there were only a little over two weeks to plan and prepare. An international team of fans was assembled to assist Zori in making this dream a reality. In the United Kingdom: one fan, Richard Stanley, set up an account to accept donations, and another fan, Sophia Kelaini volunteered to make a card—including a list of names of those who donated and a fanbook cd-rom full of fan messages and artwork—to accompany the roses. Supraja Subramanian of India also volunteered to create a gorgeous poem-card with the poem, “Child Angel” by Tagore (one of Deepak Chopra’s favorite poets) inside. Another fan, Darvon McDonald of Texas, USA, agreed to accept cash, check, and wired money payments from those fans who could not donate via the internet. Zori also assembled the California Team: Freya Wieringa, Myra J. de Boer (both from Holland), Bita Taherian (from Iran), and Sarah Hirsch (from California, USA) who were to take care of ordering, arranging, and presenting the flowers to Michael. Both Zori and Bita contacted Karen Faye, Michael’s longtime friend and make-up artist, who kindly agreed to play a vital role in helping the team to orchestrate things with Michael’s security team.

Amazingly, in just one week (the amount of time allotted in order to get the project done quickly) enough money was donated to buy over 1900 roses!! During the next week Freya and Myra ordered a white ribbon embroidered in gold with the words “We love you, Michael!” on one end and “Innocent!” on the other, to decorate the main bouquet. The roses were ordered, leaving some money for expenses incurred in arranging the flowers: 750 red, to convey the message of love; 250 white, to show support; and 500 of various oranges and pinks, to represent the multicultural variety of fans who donated. A personalized, white teddy bear was purchased and named “Vindi” (Vindication) with his own armband reading “innocent” during this time as well.
On Friday April 1st, Freya and Myra (who were already in Santa Maria for the trial) and Sarah gathered in a motel, where the 1500 original roses were delivered. After the purchase of 10 baskets, Styrofoam, waterproof tape, and chicken wire for the arrangement of the mass of flowers, 425 additional roses were purchased to spend the remainder of the donated money. Twelve buckets of water and roses made their home in two motel rooms for the weekend. The three girls spent 24 hours a day with their windows open to keep the roses cool and from wilting. This meant heavy blankets each night and a very nice smell around the clock.

Freya, Myra, and Sarah spent over 14 consecutive hours on Saturday, April 2nd, arranging the 1925 roses. Several fans including: Beatrice Arinza, Dulce Iglesias, and Sarah Arnejo from Spain, Caroline Fristedt from Sweden, Dawn Shaw from England, and Marika Prochet from France spent several hours cutting stems and arranging baskets. Each fan had contributed blood, sweat, and tears into the arrangements by the end of the day, especially because none had much experience with flower arranging, and even less experience working with such large amounts of flowers. Everyone had scratches, cuts, pricks, and other wounds after spending so much time working with the treacherous thorns and sharp chicken wire. The flowers ended up arranged with about 150-250 roses, in each of 10 baskets (9 full of multicolored roses, one full of pure white). Each basket was arranged with loving care, by hand, one rose at a time! Nine white ribbons were custom-made to adorn each basket. The ribbons had gold embroidered words that each fan wishes for Michael: love, strength, courage, hope, faith, truth, happiness, grace, and dignity. It was also decided that Vindi, the bear, would decorate the front of the basket filled with white roses to augment the innocence theme of the basket.

On Sunday, finishing touches were put on the baskets. The ribbons were attached and it was decided that the “love” ribbon would decorate the largest basket, which was to be the centerpiece when the flowers were arranged at Neverland. Michael’s bouquet of 77 roses was also arranged on Sunday night and the main, “We love you, Michael!” ribbon was added. Freya, Myra, and Sarah first removed each and every thorn, large and small, from each stem that was to go in the bouquet, in order to insure that Michael incurred no pricks!

Monday, April 4th: The Big Day! At 2:30 p.m., four cars filled with roses and the fans who arranged them arrived at the gates of Neverland. Bita, who had been instrumental in contacting Karen Faye, was also present, helping to transport roses, along with her mother, a fellow fan. She also brought a beautiful piece of 3-D, rose-themed art that she had created and which was to be presented to Michael along with the flowers. It features not only a message of support from all fans, but also “I love you, Michael” written in hundreds of languages! There were already many fans outside the gates waiting for Michael’s arrival.

Karen Faye arrived soon thereafter and after some indecisions and concern over where the flowers should be placed—inside or outside—the flowers are placed outside the gates with the fans. Four of the flower arrangers (Freya, Myra, Sara, and Sarah) and Bita were taken inside the gates to present the flowers to Michael. Michael arrived from court around 3:30 p.m. and after greeting fans outside, exited his car, and entered the guardhouse, which is just inside the gates of Neverland. Myra, holding the main bouquet, and Sarah, with fanbook/card in hand, were honored to “officially” present the roses to Michael on behalf of all the fans. When Michael heard that there were over 1900 roses, representing over 1900 fans, his reaction was a pleased and enthusiastic, “Wow!” Michael was very pleased and grateful and thanked the presenters several times. During this “presentation” he ran to look out the window a few times when the fans chanting, “Michael! Michael!” and “Innocent!” got their loudest. Then, Freya, with poem-card, Bita with the artwork, and Sara with bouquets of additional roses fans brought to the gates that day, spoke with Michael for several minuets about the project. He again thanked the girls and when he was told that the baskets of roses were right outside the gate he looked out the window and then asked security to bring them inside. He told Freya, Bita, and Sara that the fans chanting sounded “wonderful.”

After again greeting fans, Michael was driven up to his home, bouquet in hand! Zori and all the fans who participated accomplished their goal: Michael definitely smiled! He showed his happiness by generously allowing all the fans outside the gates into Neverland for a tour of his home and arcade. Inside, the fans were pleased to see the baskets of flowers adorning a path in front of the house. As the fans left, all were given a copy of Michael’s Ultimate Collection box set.

All the fans involved in the project would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Karen Faye for being so kind as to help us make Michael smile. Also to Michael’s security team for their part in coordinating the presentation and for their kindness.

And to the many fans, all over the world, who donated and worked hard to make it possible to show Michael that no matter where we are, we love and support him!

And most of all, an enormous thank you to Mr. Michael Jackson, for his inspiration, generosity, and love! We all love and support you, Michael! The truth WILL prevail! WE LOVE YOU MORE!

Die Hälfte ist besser als nichts, für Übersetzungen bin ich leider nicht zuständig, aber du könntest das Ganze durch eine Übersetzungsmaschine jagen und dich über das Ergebnis amüsieren!
