Jacksons kick off tour with a few bumps

RAMA, ONT. - Not touring for nearly three decades is bound to lead to some cobwebs.
But aside from a few technical difficulties and the occasional pitch problem, The Jacksons 2012 Unity Tour - their first since 1984’s Victory Tour - launched at Casino Rama on Wednesday night with better than expected results and without the lightning in the bottle that was Michael Jackson.
After a false start opening with a soundless video montage of The Jackson 5 as it used to be with little bro Michael (who was a major presence through the night via stills and video and an actual tribute segment) - the four remaining Jackson brothers kicked off their 95-minute show with Can You Feel It.
Backed by nine musicians - Jackie, 61, Tito, 58, Jermaine, 57, and Marlon, 55 - were otherwise front and centre, busting some familiar dance moves through early songs Blame It On The Boogie and Rock With You before sitting on stools and chatting to each other in a more slowed down second quarter.
“How you feeling?” said Marlon, who shared lead vocals with Jackie and Jermaine (the strongest voice of the bunch) and Tito, the latter who also played guitar.
Judging from the crowd who quickly gathered at the front of the stage, the audience of 4,500 (just shy of a sell-out), was feeling good.
Marlon explained how he got the far-flung brothers back together, saying Tito was into building cars at the time.
“Marlon, I was building my third son when you called me - get it right,” interrupted Tito with a smile.
The tribute to Michael came in the otherwise uptempo third quarter full of old Motown classics I Want You Back, ABC and Never Can Say Goodbye, as Jermaine took over lead vocals on Gone Too Soon while stills of Michael were shown on a video screen above the drummer and the segment ended with a raised silver sequined glove raised in the air.
“I miss you so much Michael,” one of the brothers later during I’ll Be There which sparked the first crowd singalong.
Then Jermaine was briefly given the solo spotlight for a trio of songs, Dynamite, Let’s Get Serious - which saw him pick up a bass - and Do What You Do before the brothers returned with the final uptempo segment and couple of Michael Jackson classics, Wanna Be Starting Something and Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, which really got the audience up and dancing.
The final song of the night was a Jacksons chestnut, Shake Your Body, and by that time pretty much everyone in the building was obeying that command.
Marlon turned out to the group’s live wire with Tito commenting: “My brother the dancing machine. Just wind him up.”

Jackson brothers to perform Michael’s hits on ‘Unity’ tour: Is it a tribute or a rip-off?
Opinion
by Veronica Miller | June 21, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Would you to pay to see a Jackson who isn’t Michael perform all of Michael’s hits?
The Jackson brothers hope you will. They’re going on tour this summer and they’re taking their superstar brother’s catalog along with them.
Marlon, Tito, Jackie and Jermaine have reunited for what’s being called the “Unity” Tour, which kicked off yesterday with a concert at the Rama Casino in Ontario, Canada. It’s the first time they’ve joined together for a tour since their final “Victory” concert in 1984. The new tour’s set list includes not only the hits from the Jackson 5 in their heyday — “ABC” and “I Want You Back” — but also a smattering of hits by their late brother Michael, like “I Can’t Let Her Get Away” from the 1991 album Dangerous.
The brothers say they’re playing Michael’s hits as a tribute. And with the tour starting just a few days shy of the third anniversary of Michael’s sudden death, Tito tells the Associated Press, “There’s certain songs that make you feel the sorrow… Then again, there are other songs that bring so much joy and happiness. I just imagine how he used to walk and spin and do all these things. You can feel his presence here.”
But will the Jackson brothers be able to convince audience to come see them play a bunch of Michael’s hits, without Michael on the bill? It’s tough to call.
Let’s face it — Michael Jackson was indeed the star of his family. His record sales were unprecedented, his fanbase was global and his music videos premiered with ratings higher than some television shows. In fact, once Thriller became the juggernaut of 1983, Michaels’s fame so eclipsed that of his brothers that he started opting out of appearing with the Jacksons that next year. He recorded a couple songs for 1984’s Victory album and went on tour with the group, but quit the band soon thereafter. In fact, it’s widely known that Michael doesn’t even appear in the video for The Jacksons’ hit “Torture” — a wax figure stands in his place instead.
It’s understandable that the rest of the Jacksons would want to hold on to their brother’s memory and his musical legacy. But it’s hard to say that they’re not trying to capitalize off of it also. Just months after Michael’s death in August 2009, cable channel A&E premiered a reality series starring the four of the brothers, titled The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty. Filming had begun before Michael’s death, but after his passing, the show was spun to show the brothers grappling with it. It’s hard not to call the series “opportunistic,” and television critics had even less-flattering words.
In the Washington Post, Lisa de Moraes took both the brothers and the production company to task, saying the show oozed “desperation from both sides of the camera.” Mike Hale wrote in the New York Times that while it’s easy to see money as the motivator in such a program, it seemed that “ego, or a childlike need for affirmation, is the larger motivation and has been for a long time.” And Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly said no one would have been interested in the show if Michael hadn’t died just months before the premiere.
So if the Jacksons have trouble drawing an audience on television without their famous brother, what can they expect when it comes to concert sales? It’s telling, and unfortunately, almost comical, that tickets to Saturday’s show in Detroit are available on Groupon.
Still, the Jacksons may strike a chord with music fans hungry for nostalgia. The June 28th concert at the Apollo Theater is sold out. And it’s certain that their hits from the 60s and 70s will be the ones most likely to get the audience on its feet.
It’s hard not to say that the Jacksons are still trying to ride Michael’s sequined coattails to fame and success, years after his death, even after they’ve all past the age of 55. It’s understandable that they’d want to honor their brother’s legacy and keep his spirit alive. But even now, as they cue up Michael’s solo hits on their group tour, The Jacksons are still inadvertently playing second fiddle to a superstar.

Jacksons Return Home
The Jackson Brothers felt "back home" as they jumped onstage in the middle of 2300 Jackson Blvd. to graciously accept the Key to the City from Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. Hundreds of fans flocked the streets where the Jacksons grew up and recollected the schools, childhood memories and the girls they dated.

On Friday June 22nd, Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito Jackson visited their childhood home at 2300 Jackson St. in Gary, Indiana. The brothers received keys to the city and gave out tickets to their Friday night show at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.
“This is where the magic started; right there rehearsing every day,” Jermaine Jackson said, pointing at the former Jackson home.
Larry Humphrey, 30, of Gary, brought his daughter Larae Humphrey, 5, and his niece Tierny Lockett, 8, “to give them a history lesson” on the Jackson legacy.
“Everybody, even the kids, love Mike,” Larry Humphrey said.
Tierny’s favorite Michael Jackson song is “Dirty Diana.” Larae said her favorite is “the scary one,” meaning 1982’s “Thriller.”
As the brothers shared their memories of growing up in Gary, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson spoke about what it means for Gary when the Jacksons come home.
“It’s always good when you have native sons come home, especially ones who have done well and made a name for themselves,” Freeman-Wilson said.
Jeremy Horn, 26, came from Forest Park, Ill., to see the brothers. He wore a Michael Jackson T-shirt and clutched the free ticket to the Jacksons’ show. He said the brothers’ success — especially Michael’s — meant a great deal to him as a black person.
“At first I didn’t believe it (when Michael died). I just broke down in tears. It felt like I lost a good friend,” Horn said. “He made black music more universal. He made it more colorblind. He made it more acceptable.”
Freeman-Wilson wasn’t sure how many keys to the city Gary has given its most famous family over the years.
“You can never have too many keys,” Freeman-Wilson said, laughing. “We all have a ring of them, right?”

Without Michael, the 'Jackson 4' does not sound quite right
A ghost hovered over the stage of the Apollo Theater Thursday night. While the four key remaining members of The Jacksons sang and danced through scores of old hits on their first full tour together in nearly 30 years, the specter of a lost sibling had to occupy a key spot.

Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Jermaine, the remaining Jackson brothers, sing their hits during 'Unity Tour 2012' at the Apollo Theater.
A ghost hovered over the stage of the Apollo Theater Thursday night. While the four key remaining members of The Jacksons sang and danced through scores of old hits on their first full tour together in nearly 30 years, the specter of a lost sibling had to occupy a key spot.
The brothers hardly downplayed that impression. The show featured four different video montages of Michael, who died three years ago this week. More, they performed many songs which originally featured lead vocals from their missing brother, some of which came from his albums alone.

Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Jermaine work together.
By definition, that made the night a mix of the reverent and the awkward. The imbalance began right at the start. Before the brothers sang a single note, a video played of the early days, stressing their looming, absent star. The Jacksons’ own performance began stridently. On the hit “Can You Feel It,” the band of seven musicians played so loudly, it sometimes drowned the singers out. Not that they gave the musicians much of a challenge. Songs like “Blame It On The Boogie” and “Wanna Be Where You Are” found the four sounding either pale or wobbly.
Things got squirmier still when they tried to sing parts strictly identified with Michael. Marlon’s vocal on Michael’s song “Rock With U” creaked and wavered. Jackie’s lead in classics like “I Want You Back” and “ABC” landed miles from the originals’ energy.

Marlon performs.
The guys fared far better in the ballads. In “Heaven Knows I Love You” their voices blended smoothly and they each took able solo turns, including baritone Tito. Likewise, Jermaine did his brother proud on Michael’s song “Gone Too Soon,” dedicated to his parting.
As the second most commercially successful of The Jacksons, Jermaine carved out a segment for his New Wave era solo hits, which have held up remarkably well. The show also benefitted from the guys’ classic campy choreography, now tailored to suit men who range from age 55 (Marlon) to 61 (Jackie). But even the show’s sturdier moments couldn’t upstage the mix of strangeness and sentimentality built into the event. For die-hard fans, the 90-minute night had some value. But there’s no getting around the fact that, ultimately, it wound up making The Jacksons look like a tribute band to their own legacy.

Der Artikel und ein Foto hier: “Without Michael, the 'Jackson 4' does not sound quite right during Apollo Theater gig”. Wir sind gespannt, wie unser "Korrespondent" Roman das Konzert erlebt hat, der auch im Apollo war und nach seiner Rückkehr berichten wird.
