    Erstes Soloalbum von Tito Jackson

      Under the Bridge presents

      TITO JACKSON
      +special guest Larissa Eddie
Tito Jackson, elder brother of the late Michael Jackson, returns to London in July for a rare solo show at Under the Bridge. Drawing on his unyielding passion for blues, R&B and pop, the set will cover a broad spectrum of musical ground featuring classic hits from Tito’s time in The Jackson 5, as well as songs from his hugely anticipated debut solo album.
Throughout the course of an incredible 50-year career, Tito Jackson has sold over 100 million records, and as guitarist, vocalist and contributing songwriter for The Jackson 5, became part of music’s greatest dynasty. Tito’s success with the recording masterpieces ‘I Want You Back’, ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’, ‘I’ll Be There’ (the best-selling single in Motown’s history) and other mega-hits of that time is part of a phenomenon that impacts generation after generation.
Tito Jackson: “I’m thrilled to be performing in London again. We’re gonna have a lot of fun playing songs from my very first solo album, as well as some of the hits from the early days. I look forward to seeing you all at Under the Bridge on July 17th!”

Michael Jackson's spirit still visits the family, especially when we sing, says brother Tito

Michael Jackson’s spirit regularly visits his family – especially when they perform, brother Tito reveals.

He tells us: “All the time I feel his spirit , especially when I’m performing with the brothers on stage at a live performance.

“You can feel the spirit all the time, absolutely. It’s a happy feeling because Michael was a warm, happy, loving person. It’s a comforting feeling.”

Tito, 61, adds: “I have had times when I silently talk to him. I’ll ask him a question. ‘What should I do?’”

He is launching his debut solo album at West London’s Under the Bridge on July 17.

And he’s been getting political too, saying he will back Democrat Hillary Clinton , 67, in the next American elections.

He adds: “I don’t like to get into politics too much – but I support the Clintons, that’s all I’ll say.

“It’s wonderful that you have free healthcare in the UK. So if I needed a doctor or hospital I could just see someone. That’s fantastic.”

Tito Jackson interview: 'Michael was the most mischievous one'

Travelling Life: Tito Jackson, the founding member of The Jackson Five, recalls causing mischief on the road with Michael Jackson and more recent travel experiences

          Interview by Soo Kim

          10:00AM BST 12 Sep 2015

          How often do you travel?

All of the time for work, but I love travelling. Recently I've been to Malaysia, Japan, Jamaica and Britain before going back to Los Angeles, where I live. I can't remember the last time I've been on vacation, but I spent a couple of days in Montego Bay and considered that a break from work. I also love coming to England. One of my favourite parts is Devon, where I spent some time a few years ago [in Appledore] with my family for about a month or so in the summer.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?

The perfect girl to be with and that's it really. I love being around tropical waters, but any place near the ocean is fine.

Your earliest memory of travelling abroad?

To London around 1971, in the early days of the Jackson 5. We were mobbed by 10,000 fans at the airport. Michael [Jackson] was wearing a scarf that day and he kept getting choked, being pulled in several directions by fans. We made it into our car and fans were chasing us down the road. As exciting as it all sounds, it was quite frightening. We were in London for our first concert abroad and it was the first trip overseas for the Jackson 5 as well.

Where did you go on holiday as a child?

I remember going to Arizona to visit family and also to perform. We also travelled around the Midwest of America, including to Ohio, as well as Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York and Chicago, where the Jackson 5 was first discovered and signed, after performing with Gladys Knight at the Regal Theatre. We then got to audition for Motown Records and the rest is history, I guess. The Jackson 5 travelled a lot on the road, and we used to practise our harmonies while driving in the car. We loved to sing together when we'd hear a song we love on the radio. We were big fans of the Temptations and Marvin Gaye - a lot of Motown music.

          Favourite city?

It's a toss up between London and Tokyo, leaning a bit more towards London because more people speak English there, while in Tokyo I have to resort to hand gestures and body language to communicate. But both cities are beautiful and have very beautiful people. I think people are what really make a city above anything else. I travel to London more often than anywhere else abroad and I love it. There's a really refreshing vibe everywhere in the city, with so many little corners to be discovered. I like going on the London Eye for the views.

Do you go back to Gary, Indiana, where the Jackson 5 was formed?

Every couple of years or so to visit family and I've been back to perform as well. My mum always throws a birthday celebration for Michael there [where the Jackson brothers were all born] every year, but I've always been on the road when it took place.

          Favourite hotel?

The New York Palace Hotel [formerly known as the Helmsley Palace Hotel] in Manhattan. It's a very beautiful and elegant hotel with a historic vibe. I remember being there when I was around 14 and Michael was about nine. We used to fill balloons with water and then throw them out the window of our hotel room. We were just kids back then travelling as the Jackson 5 and there was nothing else to do so this was our form of excitement. The hotels became our playground when we were on the road. Michael was the most mischievous one; he came up with all the tricks. He would leave our hotel room door open just a crack and put a water balloon at the top of it so that the next person who walks through it would get hit by it. He had a lot of fun with that one.

          Favourite holiday destination?

Hawaii, including Honolulu and Maui. I find it really relaxing to be there.

City with the best music scene?

London, New York and also Chicago.

          Most musically inspiring city?

It depends on where I am. If I'm in Jamaica or the Virgin Islands, I'm inspired to write music with more of a reggae feel. When I'm in New York, I feel more romantic and I'm usually in the mood to write ballads.

          Worst travel experience?

At the international airport in Ho Chi Minh about five years ago. I was carrying a passport that looked a bit worn out at the time, as I'd had it for about 10 years. At the immigration desk, one of the workers took one look at it and then took it to some room in the back. Then someone came out and said, "Mr Jackson, can you follow me please?", and I was taken to a back room. There was a guy sitting behind a desk holding my passport who said: "Your passport looks pretty raggedy. Do you think George Bush would let me into his country with a passport like this?" I think he did that purely just for the enjoyment of saying that to me. I was there to perform for the president of Vietnam at the time, so in the end he let me into the country.

Have you ever been on safari?

I went to a safari in Senegal a long time ago with the Jackson 5. I was in my teens and don't remember much apart from rolling up the car windows when we got too close to the lions.

          Favourite airline?

          Virgin Airlines.

          Where next?

I've never been to Israel and would love to see Tel Aviv for its history.

Tito Jackson performs with The Jacksons at the BBC's Proms in the Park concert in Hyde Park today. His solo album is out now.
