The 80s: David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’

In the 1980s, David Bowie had already achieved what many would consider the ultimate in stardom. He was internationally known and had appeared in several films; his elaborate stage shows, like his Ziggy Stardust tour, were legendary; and he had a string of hits such as “Fame,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Golden Years” and his collaborative effort with the band Queen, “Under Pressure.” David-Bowie-Lets-DanceHowever, it was his 1983 album Let’s Dance which would catapult the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer into mega-stardom, making him a household name amongst music fans. He originally planned to work on the album with producer Tony Visconti, who had produced several of his previous records, but Bowie decided to enlist the talents of guitarist extraordinaire and co-founder of the group Chic, Nile Rodgers. While Bowie’s decision proved to be near fatal to his working relationship with Visconti, musically it was a wise choice. Bowie and Rodgers recorded the album in a little over two weeks from start to finish. The title track started out as a totally different tune which Bowie played for Rodgers on a 12-string guitar. Rodgers rearranged the song, and after bringing in some musicians, including guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn who delivered a riveting, bluesy guitar solo, the single “Let’s Dance” became the funky, hard- hitting dance classic we know today. The album was a multi-platinum smash thanks to the singles “Modern Love,” “China Girl,” and the title track, which became a number one song on almost every chart worldwide. As a single, “Let’s Dance” was enough rock and roll to hit the top 10 on the Top Rock Tracks chart and had enough soul to make it to the top 20 on the Hot Black Singles chart. The album was a shot in the arm for both Bowie– whose Serious Moonlight tour became his most successful ever–and for Rodgers, who went on to become one of the most sought out producers in popular music, producing Madonna’s Like A Virgin album, as well as other artists, among them Duran Duran, Mick Jagger and INXS.

Hab mal gelesen, dass David Bowie der erste weisse bei Soul train war ... leider weiss ich keine quelle.
Scheint aber eher Elton John gewesen zu sein, wenn die obigen auftrittsdaten stimmen.
Vielleicht war keiner von beiden der erst ...

With A Child's Heart war für mich wie ein Blitz der mich getroffen hat, als ich das das erste Mal gehört habe.
Ein Blitz der mir sprichwörtlich durch Mark, Bein, Herz und Seele ging.
Hatte es bis zu dem Zeitpunkt als ich anfing mich mit Michael zu beschäftigen niemals irgendwo gehört.Kommentar

Ja, ein wirklich sehr schöner Song. Mit dem Song endet auch eine VHS von Michael, mir fällt aber der Name grad nicht mehr ein.Kommentar
