His music, in particular the Thriller album and on MTV, let the world finally see how gifted he really, truly was as a performer, not just on a record. The dancing, when you saw the whole package, was just brilliant. The way he danced and sang — I've never seen anything like it. He was so incredibly gifted.

I did try to moonwalk. I tried several times. Not recently, but everyone was so intrigued with that motion. As I watched, I would just sit there and say, How is a human being able do that? How is he capable of moving like that? It was mind-boggling.

When we did the "We Are the World" video, I was standing right beside him that entire evening. Most of the time we were singing, but in between, when we had breaks, he was charming and very gracious, and at the same time seemed so vulnerable. I'd never met him before and was very much in awe of his talent. He was very shy — except turn the camera on him and start the music, and suddenly there was this great transformation that blew everybody away. How could this human being in his personal life be so shy, and then be so completely the opposite, being the greatest performer ever? It's almost like he was two people.

A baby elephant to play with, and a room filled with toys and balloons? Sneaking out to see the sights of Asia’s most exciting city without the prying eyes of security guards and fans? No problem, when you are the King of Pop and have just struck up a friendship with the Bangkok policeman who looks after visiting stars.

Pol Col Taveesak Veeravattanayothin of the Tourism Police Department had good reason to be upset when he heard of Michael Jackson’s passing. He escorted the megastar when he toured Thailand in 1993 and 1996 and became close enough to the star to learn that Jackson had the genius of a musical great, but the soul of an innocent, playful child.

‘‘I was in shock just like everybody else at his sudden death. It’s numbing. It isn’t even sinking in yet, but I think the world has not only lost its greatest entertainer but probably also the nicest person,’’ said Pol Col Taveesak.

On the first tour in August 1993, the police officer says, Jackson arrived ‘‘abruptly’’ in Bangkok a day early from Hong Kong with only one security guard. The tour was dogged by controversy as Jackson was forced to postpone two shows after child molestation charges against him emerged in the United States.

‘‘It was chaotic because we had to rearrange the security plan in a hurry.’’ Pol Col Taveesak paused, recollecting the frantic scene. ‘‘It was fun, though.’’

A lieutenant colonel back then, he rushed to the Oriental Hotel where Jackson was scheduled to stay, struggling past hundreds of fans gathering in front of the hotel. ‘‘I was told to meet them in their hotel room immediately. I jumped into the lift going up to the room, and to my surprise I found myself standing right next to Michael and his guard. It was just like a scripted movie scene.’’

Jackson greeted the police officer, who informed the star he was there to take care of him, with a simple ‘‘Hi’’.

‘‘He was very shy. He took a look at me, wagging his finger towards my uniform and then said out of the blue ‘nice’.’’

At the time, the media reported that Jackson and his entourage, including the concert crew, were in conflict.

To Pol Col Taveesak, it looked as though Jackson was fleeing from something. ‘‘He didn’t bring any luggage.’’ He said Jackson’s trusted personal bodyguard later confided to him that the star was surrounded with ‘‘bad people’’ who took advantage of his fame and money like ‘‘leeches’’.

‘‘Michael’s entourage splurged on everything. I asked one of them who’d pay for the bill. He said ‘Michael’.’’

Since there was no planned itinerary, Pol Col Taveesak asked Jackson’s bodyguard what the singer wanted to do.

‘‘Michael went shy. He whispered to his bodyguard to tell me he wanted to do a little tour of the city. He wanted to see where Bangkokians hung out. Well, Siam Square it is!’’

The next morning, Pol Col Taveesak picked them up at the hotel.
‘‘I bought Michael a gift but didn’t have time to wrap it. He saw the small plastic bag I carried. I think he knew it was for him. He curiously kept looking at the bag all the time. I guess he was guessing what it might be. I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate.

‘‘His bodyguard didn’t say anything, so I handed Michael the gift. ‘This is for you, sir.’ I could tell he was thrilled when he opened it. His eyes lit up and a broad smile followed, as if he was jumping up and down inside like a kid happy to have a candy bar. ‘Thank you so much,’ Michael said to me.

‘‘It was the set of ‘nice’ decorations from my uniform which he pointed to the previous day.’’

At Siam Square, the three went into a record store. Jackson seemed interested in what kind of music Thai people liked. He bought many CDs, then headed to Siam Centre where he spent quite some time in a musical instrument store.

‘‘Michael walked straight to a grand piano, sat down and started to play. I thought to myself: ‘Wow, lucky me! I’m privileged to see his private show.’ But Michael just hit the keys like a kid who doesn’t know any notes, giggling and stomping his feet. He was just fooling around.’’

The whole day Jackson looked at ease and relaxed, still shy, but happily waving to people on the street, who recognised him and shouted his name. There were Japanese groupies following him around the world. These girls were in Bangkok too and even hired a boat to get a glimpse of Jackson stepping out on the balcony of his hotel room.

‘‘He was an ordinary person enjoying a short adventure and appreciating every single moment of his rare freedom,’’ recalled Pol Col Taveesak. Was Jackson demanding? ‘‘Not at all. He’s the opposite of that. His only exceptional requests were to play with a baby elephant in the hotel, to meet children and to have a games room filled with balloons and toys both in his hotel room and in the changing room at the National Stadium where the concerts took place.

‘‘Frankly, that’s quite understandable as we knew how he grew up with the lack of a childhood.’’

The policeman also helped inspire Jackson’s famous crotch-grabbing move.

‘‘Michael had a zip-fly malfunction. It was loose and opened several times. I had to tell him once. He was embarrassed. I think the zipper issue inspired that signature dance.’’ Have you seen his face up close? ‘‘Yes. His skin looked almost transparent. Michael covered up his face with a large handkerchief when he was in public, though.’’

Jackson’s crew arrived the day after their day trip, and Pol Col Taveesak said he was reprimanded by one of the security guards. But the policeman, who had escorted the Brazilian national soccer team and Miss Universe contestants, was aware that the local Tourist Police had provided beefed-up security and ‘‘Michael was comfortable with it’’.

However, the holiday was over. Jackson went back to work. He was scheduled to shoot a music video at the Royal Thai Air Force Academy Cadet School. He marched alongside a parade of air force cadets, and the clip was shown on MTV many times. ‘‘Michael was so po ised and professional. The shoot went well. On stage he was even more astonishing. It was by far the biggest concert ever held in Thailand.’’

After the shows, Jackson and the team left almost immediately for Singapore. Pol Col Taveesak said sitting in the car with his personal bodyguard, Jackson looked ‘‘frail and exhausted’’ after putting all his energy into the show.

‘‘Still, he nodded and the guard, who was friendly with me the whole trip, handed me a bag. I opened it. Now it’s my turn to act like a kid. I was given a pair of his signature large aviators [sunglasses], a handkerchief and a picture of himself with a signed autograph. ‘Thank you for your gift and for taking care of me’, Michael said with the exact same innocent smile I saw earlier. I was simply delighted.’’

I remember when I presented him with an award at the Brits in London, and I was reading the script, and I just couldn't get through all the encomiums, so I stopped. And then he performed "Earth Song" and Jarvis Cocker got up and did his thing. Michael didn't understand why people had been laughing. He rang me at 3 in the morning to ask about it. I just told him "Go to bed; don't worry." "Earth Song" was a little hubristic, but it was still a cool song. He was a pop singer; he hadn't invented penicillin. But what do you expect when you have a kid who never went to school, and then he was thrust into this mad existence? My favorite track is "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," but the most important is "We Are the World." I was never that crazy about the song, but at the time most Americans didn't know where Africa was. I don't think Michael understood the issues, the politics and economics; it didn't interest him, but when he was asked to help, he did.

Also die Meinung von Geldorf über Michael ist doch schon sehr abwertend. Der hat sich wohl nicht wirklich mit ihm beschäftigt. Seine Lobesrede bei den Awards kommt mir da im nachhinein auch eher wie eine Pharse vor.


Ich erinnere mich, als ich ihn vorstellte bei einer Auszeichnung bei den Brit Awards in London, und ich las das Skript, und ich konnte einfach nicht durch all die Lobreden kommen, also habe ich aufgehört. Und dann spielte er den "Earth Song" und Jarvis Cocker stand auf und tat seine Sache. Michael verstand nicht, warum die Leute lachten. Er rief mich um 3 Uhr morgens an um danach zu fragen. Ich habe ihm gesagt "Geh ins Bett, mach dir keine Sorgen." Die "Earth Song" -Darstellung war ein wenig anmaßend, aber es war trotzdem ein cooler Song. Er war ein Popstar, er hatte nicht Penicillin erfunden. Aber was erwartest du, wenn du als Kind nie zur Schule gegangen bist und dann in diese verrückte Existenz geschubst wirst? Mein Lieblingstrack ist "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", aber der Wichtigste war "We Are the World". Ich war noch nie verrückt nach dem Song, aber er kam zu einer Zeit als die meisten Amerikaner nicht wußten wo Afrika war. Ich glaube nicht, dass Michael die Probleme, die Ökonmie, die Politik verstand, es interessierte ihn nicht, aber als er gebeten wurde, zu helfen, hat er es getan.

The first time I met Michael was when I danced in the video for "Smooth Criminal," and for some reason I remember his fingernails, because they were so well manicured. That was my first job in L.A. as a dancer. And it was the most amazing job — I made $10,000 because the job was for three months. Just the dance section. Isn't that something? There were, like, 40 dancers on the job. You know the scene in "Smooth Criminal" when he gets on the table? I'm standing right there because they wanted me to spot him, so if he fell, I would catch him. And he would never fall.



I had gone to see his show in Europe, where it was, like, 100,000 people and they don't have seats on the main floor of the stadium. They just stand up and they're like cattle shoulder to shoulder. And that was just amazing, seeing all the medics come in and out because people were fainting, people were crying. I can't explain it. It was like the Holy Ghost: if you ever go to a black Baptist church, people shout, ladies faint. That's the only thing I can describe that's like how it was. And Michael told me one thing too: When people would grab him when he was walking through from backstage, and they could grab him or something, he said it was like fire — because they would grab him and they would pull him. They didn't want to hurt him; it was that they just wanted a piece of him.

Most people, when they're rehearsing a dance movement, they don't do it full-out. Michael would always do everything to the fullest in rehearsal. He would do it like he was onstage, every time. And as a dancer, you would be like, Why is he doing it that hard? Every chromosome worked, the minute he moved. I don't know if you've ever seen when he was going to court [in 2005], he got on top of his car. Even in that moment, he didn't dance like he was on top of his car, he danced like he was onstage. He danced like every chromosome was working, right there, on top of a car. And when you really look at that tape, when he jumps on top of the car, he hurts his knees. He has to land on his knees when he jumps on the car from the ground. But even though his knees were in pain, he still gave everything he had. If you rewind it and look at it one day, you'll know what I mean.

Auf dem Siam Square besuchten die drei einen plattenladen. Jackson schien sich für die musik zu intererssieren, die die Thais mögen. Er erwarb viele CDs, dann gings weiter zum Siam Centre und hielt sich eine zeitlang in einem geschäft für musikinstrumente auf.

‘‘Michael walked straight to a grand piano, sat down and started to play. I thought to myself: ‘Wow, lucky me! I’m privileged to see his private show.’ But Michael just hit the keys like a kid who doesn’t know any notes, giggling and stomping his feet. He was just fooling around.’’

His music, in particular the Thriller album and on MTV, let the world finally see how gifted he really, truly was as a performer, not just on a record. The dancing, when you saw the whole package, was just brilliant. The way he danced and sang — I've never seen anything like it. He was so incredibly gifted.

I did try to moonwalk. I tried several times. Not recently, but everyone was so intrigued with that motion. As I watched, I would just sit there and say, How is a human being able do that? How is he capable of moving like that? It was mind-boggling.

When we did the "We Are the World" video, I was standing right beside him that entire evening. Most of the time we were singing, but in between, when we had breaks, he was charming and very gracious, and at the same time seemed so vulnerable. I'd never met him before and was very much in awe of his talent. He was very shy — except turn the camera on him and start the music, and suddenly there was this great transformation that blew everybody away. How could this human being in his personal life be so shy, and then be so completely the opposite, being the greatest performer ever? It's almost like he was two people.

Bruminchen, solange das elefantenbaby in den aufzug gepasst hat und Michael die planzlichen hinterlassenschaften seines tierischen gasts brav zusammengefegt hat...??!
Auch in einer mega-grossstadt wie Bangkok ist es nichts aussergewöhnliches, dass an exponierter stelle mal elefanten rumstehen ... die touris sind jedenfalls begeistert und für die Thais stellt das kein grosses problem dar ... es hat nix mit entwürdigung zu tun. Die Thai verehren ihre elefanten sehr und behandeln sie mit respekt. Hab vor einem monat noch mit elefanten ... auch mit einem baby in einem fluss in Thailand gebadet ... und ich kann bestätigen, dass es mächtig spass macht, sich mit diesen wunderbaren tieren zu umgeben und deren nähe zu spüren ... und verspielt sind sie tatsächlich. Beides sind keine situationen aus dem natürlichen leben eines elefanten, sie sind weder dafür geboren touris zu bespassen noch promis im hotelzimmer zu unterhalten. Xydalona, auch das mit den arbeitselefanten ist geschichte in Thailand, aber auch für diese ehemalige tätigkeit wurden sie nicht geboren.
Von daher relativiert sich der wunsch Michaels ... ungewöhnlich bleibt er freilich!

Glaube nicht, dass dies aus dem Kontext gerissen wurde. Er hat wohl einen Stellungnahme zu MJ kurz nach seinem Tod abgegeben. Von Geldorf habe ich auch schon mal Aussagen über Michael kurz nach seinem Prozess gelesen da hat er sich auch nicht positiv über ihn geäußert.

The Oak Ridge Boys hosted The Jackson 5 at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium in 1981, who serenaded William Lee Golden of The Oak Ridge Boys and his sons with the Oaks’ then current number-one hit, "Elvira."

William Lee Golden and family returned the favor, singing "Happy Birthday" to Michael Jackson, who had just turned 23 years old. They presented Michael with a birthday cake afterwards.

"I took my sons to see The Jacksons at the Nashville Arena in late 1981. It was rumored at the time that it would be their last tour together. I love great entertainment
and music of all styles and make a point to see the masters. The Jacksons were on the top of their game that night. They were incredible singers and dancers."

Mr. Golden added, "Michael had an exceptional talent that shown the brightest. Backstage I was able to meet them all. They were very gracious. At that time, Elvira was at the top of the Pop charts and to my surprise they sung Elvira to me and my sons. It was an evening we will never forget. I was amazed to watch him over the years as he accomplished even higher achievements and became one of the world's greatest entertainers. My thoughts and prayers are with his family," shared Mr. Golden.

William Lee Golden was interviewed by Nashville's WKRN-News 2, "It’s a terrible loss to the entertainment world. Michael – all the Jackson 5 were great – but Michael kind of stood out as a fantastic talent. He had the whole ball of wax -- Not only a great voice, but the ability, flexible ability, and dancing. He was a great entertainer and I respect that about him.

We chit-chatted for a moment about our mutual respect for the legendary James Brown. He, Jackson, had a lot of the same enthusiastic abilities and performing at the same time, I thought. He was the new generation of (James Brown)."
