Michael’s strength and comfort came from his fans

“He was a proud man,with much dignity and decency.To see him being totally exhausted and all in–it was hard to bear.After we got certainty that he will be prosecuted,he was totally down to the ground at first.He was left in disbelief that they would do this to him.But after this time of depression,he actually took a grip on himself and he changed his attitude.He again became the fighter and he was prepared to attack the whole matter.But despite all of this it was an incredibly hard time for him.

If he wouldn’t have had his fans, it would have been almost impossible for him to find a further meaning of life.

I was a bit shocked about this.I was aware of the fact that Michael really loved his fans.But I was never aware of how much strength he got out of the fact that he was loved by his fans.

If he felt bad and down we cheered him upwith fan gifts and letters.And he loved it from his very heart.First and foremost the paintings.Not only in those hard times,but always.No matter where we’ve been–if fans were around and he saw drawings and paintings,he always said: ‘Get me the pictures,get me those pictures!’ “

What did the fans mean to Michael?

“They were his family.They were his crutch and they gave him strength.More than any other thing.And he loved them above all things for that.And he told this to his children too.Every time,in any place where we stayed in hotels etc.He showed his fans to his kids and explained to them,what the fans mean to him and how much they love him.“

But weren’t his siblings and parents rather his support? Mainly during the trial days?

“They were there and it was good that way.But Michael’s strength and comfort came clearly from the fans.He loved them beyond words.I mean,he respected his siblings and parents and loved them.He always cared for their wellbeing and that they wouldn’t miss anything.But this closeness and love–it came rather from the fans.Always,when he said that he loves them and ‘I love you more’ – then it was the simple truth.”

Below is a story from Katherine Jackson's 'My Family':

Because they still lived at home, Michael, Janet, and LaToya were
especially close. Somehow, Janet and LaToya had the ability to turn my
increasingly private, driven son into the lighthearted Michael of old - if
for a little while.

They loved to play practical jokes on one another. Michael especially
enjoyed tormenting LaToya with fake spiders and tarantulas. He’d place
one of his plastic creatures atop the phone in her room, call her, and
listen for her shrieks. Knowing how particular she was about her room, he’d also delight in charging through the door and bouncing off her bed, with its white-satin sheets.

“I’ll teach you to be so picky!” he’d exclaim amid her furious screams.

Having been informed by Michael that he was so proud to be working with Sidney Lumet, LaToya conceived the revenge prank of all time.

One day shortly before Michael left for New York to begin filming, he
received a call on his private line from “Mr. Lumet’s secretary." Mr.Lumet
was in the neighborhood, the voice announced, and would be stopping by in five minutes to take him out to dinner.

Michael didn’t know what to do first; he wasn’t dressed, and his room was a mess. Somehow in five minutes he made himself presentable, tidied up, and ran from door to door informing everyone excitedly, “Sidney Lumet is coming to take me to dinner!” He then sat down and waited for our security to inform him that Mr. Lumet had arrived. And Waited. I sat with him; I, too, believed that the director was coming.

Finally, LaToya confessed, “Michael, Sidney Lumet isn’t taking you to dinner. That was me on the phone!”

I’ve never seen Michael so angry. He dragged LaToya outside and wet her from head to toe with the hose.

Michael Jackson is the legendary King of Pop, and remains such in a world filled with artists. Despite his untimely and devastating passing on June 25, 2009, his spirit is very much alive. The fans continue to celebrate and honor the star that has left such an indelible mark on the world. June 25 of this year marked the two-year anniversary of the star’s passing, and an auction took place which was highly-anticipated by many. Michael Jackson’s iconic jacket worn in his timeless “Thriller” video was sold at Julien’s Auctions for a record $1.8 million dollars.

In an exclusive new interview with Darren Julien, (the President and CEO of Julien’s Auctions), the spirit of the auction event is discussed, and Julien reveals what it was like to know Michael Jackson, and why the star is an important part of the history of the auction house.

Katrina-Kasey Wheeler: It is obvious that Michael Jackson is one of the most-loved entertainers in the world. What amount did you expect the “Thriller” jacket to be sold for? Previous reports indicated around $400,000. Are you at all surprised by the amount that the jacket sold for?

Darren Julien: We had no idea what it would sell for, but we anticipated it would be around $600,000-$800,000, since we sold one of his iconic gloves for $420,000. We figured the jacket was much more significant and should bring a higher price. As the auction drew closer, we started to have interest around the million dollar mark but we had no idea it would ever bring the staggering $1.8 million that it did. So yes, we were very pleasantly surprised that is achieved this price.

KKW: What other items in the Michael Jackson auction sold for high amounts? Are there any other items that sold for anywhere near the neighborhood of the “Thriller” jacket?

DJ: Julien’s Auctions holds all the world records for selling Michael Jackson items at the highest prices. The highest price paid for one of his items previously was his white glove from the Motown 25 Special. We sold it for $420,000. The next highest item was his “Bad” jacket that we sold for $271,000.

KKW: Apart from the “Thriller” jacket, are there any other items that generated a high amount of interest in the auction on June 26, 2011?

DJ: Yes there were many items that generated interest like the cape Ringo Star wore in “Help” and Frank Sinatra’s Jaguar.

KKW: Was there a high number of bidders for the “Thriller” jacket, or was the auction for the jacket mainly between two or three people?

DJ: We had over 12 people register to bid on the “Thriller” jacket, but only four people were bidding over the $500,000 point. Once it reached over $1 million, the bidding was down to two people, and both were in the room.

KKW: Are you pleased that the jacket was purchased by Milton Verret and that it will be displayed at Dell’s Children’s Hospital?

DJ: Yes, I am very pleased. I have known Milton for years and he has a heart of gold. He is very genuine and sincere that this jacket be used for benefiting and raising money for children’s charities. I am especially happy because this is what Michael would have wanted as well.

KKW: Did you ever have the opportunity to meet Mr. Michael Jackson, and if so, can you share the experience with our readers?

DJ: Yes, I met Michael on several occasions, but mostly talked with him on the phone. I first met Michael at an event with Quincy Jones. All my dealings with Michael were always very positive, and he had a sweet and gentle spirit about him. We are very grateful for all that he did for us, and will always be an important part of Julien’s history.

KKW: June 25, 2011 marked the two-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing. Fans celebrated his life in various ways. The entertainer has greatly influenced artists of every genre, and fans that aspire to greatness -- even those outside of the music industry. How has Michael Jackson affected your life?

DJ: I grew up listening to his music, and like many others was drawn to the sincerity in his music and his voice. There has always been something special that set Michael apart from all other musicians. When Martin and I were contacted about clearing Neverland -- and that Michael trusted us to handle this project -- we were deeply honored. It was a surreal experience. We are not easily star-stuck as we deal with some of the biggest celebrities in the world, but Michael giving us the opportunity to work with him was a life-changing experience. We will always be deeply grateful and indebted to him for what he has done for us. Now, when I listen to his music, I feel an even deeper connection than before because of our personal experiences with him.

KKW: Was there any particular feeling/air at the auction on June 26? Were bidders excited about the items that were up for auction?

DJ: Yes, there was such high energy and excitement in the room. It was like the moment everyone had been waiting for, and we all knew something special was going to happen. I knew that there would be press, but I had no idea of the amount of camera crews that would show up for this event. The cameras, fans, and spectators all together made it one of the most historic auctions in history.

KKW: Is there anything that you would like to add, or make known to our readers, the fans of Michael Jackson in regard to the auction?

DJ: Just that we are very grateful to the fans for keeping Michael’s spirit and music alive. They are a very passionate and loving group, and they help us make our events 10 times more exciting because of their presence and support.

KKW: Will there be a future Michael Jackson auction and if so, when do you anticipate that it will take place?

DJ: Yes, we will have other auctions that will include items from Michael Jackson. We are planning some major projects in the future. Whatever we do in the future, we will always make sure that Michael’s legacy is preserved and that we never do anything against the wishes of the estate, Katherine or the children as they are the ultimate protectors of Michael Jackson.

KKW: Welche anderen Teile in der MJ Auktion wurden noch für einen so hohen Preis verkauft? Gibt es andere Teile, die annähernd as die Thriller Jacke herankamen?

DJ: Julians Auctions hält den Weltrekord im Verkauf von MJ Artikeln zu den höchsten Preisen. Der höchste je zuvor erzielte Preis für ein Stück war der weiße Motown 25 Handschuh. Wir verkauften ihn für 420.000$. Das nächst teuerste Stück war die Bad Jacke, die wir für 271.000$ verkauften.

KKW: Gab es außer der Thriller Jacke noch für andere Artikel so großes Interesse in de Auktion vom 26.Juni 2011?

DJ: Ja, da gab es Artikel, die Interesse erregten ..z.B der Umhang, den Ringo Starr in Help trug, oder Frank Sinatras Jaguar.

KKW: Gab es da eine große Zahl von Bietern, oder beschränkte sich das hauptsächlich auf 3 Leute?

DJ: Für die Thriller Jacke hatten wir mehr als 12 Leute zum Bieten registriert, aber nur 3 boten über die Grenze von 500.000$. Als es dann die Million erreichte, wurde das Bieten von 2 Personen ausgetragen.

DJ: Ja, ich traf Michael Jackson mehrmals, aber meistens sprachen wir am Telefon. Das erstemal traf ich Michael bei einem Event mit Quincy Jones. DJ: Ja, es lag Spannung und Aufregung in dem Raum. Es war wie der Moment, auf den jeder gewartet hatte, und wir wussten alle, dass etwas besonderes passieren würde. Ich wusste, es würde Presse da sein, aber ich hatte keine Ahnung von der Menge an Kameras die dort waren. Die Kameras, die Fans, die Zuschauer, alle zusammen machten es zu einer der legendärsten Auktionen der Geschichte.

KKW: Gibt es noch etwas, was sie die Fans von Michael Jackson bezgl. der Auktion wissen lassen möchten?

DJ: Nur, das wie sehr dankbar sind, gegenüber den Fans, dass sie Michaels Spirit und seine Musik am Leben erhalten. Sie sind eine sehr leidenschaftliche und liebenswerte Gruppe, und sie helfen mit, dass unsrere Events 10x interessanter sind, wegen ihrer Unterstützung und ihrer Anwesenheit.

In den späten 90ern war ich internationaler Manager für United Airlines und arbeitete an Bord eines Fluges von LA nach Tokyo. Ich wurde ca 45 Minuten vor dem Abflug darüberinformiert, dass Michael Jackson und 3 Bodycuards an unserem Flug teilnehmen würden. Er ist einer der wenigen Menschen weltweit, der unter falschem Namen reisen durfte, wegen dem hohen Risiko, seinen Namen auf der Passagierliste zu veröffentlichen. Dieses ist etwas, was von der US Regierung genehmigt werden muss. Er musste nicht durch den Zoll, und auch nicht durch den ganzen Flughafen. Er wurde von einer Polizeieskorte direkt kurz vor dem Start zum Flugzeug gebracht, zusammen mit 3 Bodyguards. Er sass Erster Klasser, mit einem BG neben sich und zweien dahinter. Er war einer der freundlichsten, lustigsten und sanftesten Personen, die ich je traf. Während des 12 Stunden dauernden Flugs, kam er in die Bordküche, während seine BGs schliefen, um mit den Flugbegleitern und mir zu reden. Er war von den Erzählungen der Crew, darüber, was sie bei Zwischenstopps unternahmen, fasziniert und sagte, dass er wünschte, er könne auch einfach loslaufen, um sich Touristen Attraktionen an zusehen oder einfach den Strand ohne Verkleidungen etc, entlang laufen. Er sagte, er sei wirklich neidisch auf diese "Normalität". Er war so nett, der Crew Autogramme zugeben, und verbrachte etwa 40 Minuten damit, sich mit uns zu unterhalten. Interessanter Weise fragte er nach ein wenig Wein und wollte, dass man es in einen Papp-Kaffee Becher füllte. Er erklärte, dass wenn die Leute ihn mit einem Weinglas sähen, könnte es passieren, dass jemand schreibe, er trinke und habe wahrscheinlich ein Alkoholproblem. Es war traurig zu sehen, was er alles beachten musste, nur um so etwas normales zu tun, wie ein Glas Wein zu trinken. Miko Brando (der Sohn von Marlon Brando) ist seit mehr als 25 Jahren mit Michael Jackson befreundet.

Michael war mein Idol. Er war meine Vater-Figur, seitdem mein Vater starb. Es ist merkwürdig, ohne ihn zu leben. Ich werde nie wieder derselbe sein, und ich weiß nicht, ob ich jemals über diesen Verlust hinwegkommen werde. Es ist, als ob du deinen Gefährten verlierst, jemanden, von dem du dachtest, er würde immer da sein. Es ist einfach nicht richtig. Er bedeutete mir sehr viel. Ich fühle mich, als ob ich ein anderer Mensch geworden bin seit Donnerstag. Ich fühle mich wie betäubt – verloren. Er war ein guter Freund seit so vielen Jahren. Ich schätze die Zeit, die ich mit Michael verbrachte.

Wir sind zusammen einkaufen gegangen, nach Disneyland, sind gereist und haben Zeit in Dads Haus verbracht.. Er kam einfach vorbei und kampierte eine Weile im Haus meines Dads. Ich genoß es, über Musik zu sprechen, zusammen zu essen und Spaß mit Michael zu haben. Ich kann nur sagen, wir waren einfach gute Freunde. Er war immer für mich da, wenn ich ihn brauchte, und ich denke, daß ich auch immer für ihn da war. Ich habe nicht wirklich eine herausragende Erinnerung an Michael. Es ist schwer, wenn man so lange Freunde gewesen ist, wie wir es waren. Meine besten Erinnerungen sind die Zeiten, als wir redeten, wenn er mich umarmte, wenn wir gute Gespräche hatten, und ich ihn zum lachen brachte – ich hatte wirklich Freude daran, ihn zum lachen zu bringen. Ich konnte irgendwas sagen – ihm einfach ein paar Worte ins Ohr flüstern, und ihn damit zum lachen bringen. Und Junge, er hat ein ansteckendes Lachen! Aber vor allem war Michael ein sehr liebevoller Mensch. Er hatte so viel Liebe in seinem Herzen. Er sorgte sich um jeden, insbesondere um die Leute von der Straße. Er war nicht hochnäsig, er war nicht egoistisch, und er versuchte, für jeden Zeit zu finden, weil er niemandes Gefühle verletzen wollte. Wenn er dachte, daß er etwas falsch gemacht hat, ärgerte ihn das wirklich. Er hatte mehr Liebe in sich als irgendjemand, den ich kenne.

Der Michael, den ich täglich sah, war jemand, der seine Kinder liebte. Sie waren sein Mittelpunkt. Er war ein sehr beschäftigter Mann, aber er stellte immer sicher, daß sich jemand um die Kinder kümmerte. Was viele Leute nicht begriffen, ist, was für ein guter Geschäftsmann er war. Die Tour, die er plante, ist ein perfektes Beispiel. Er war ein Perfektionist, und er wußte genau, was er wollte, und wie man es bekam. Alles, was die Tour betraf, mußte von Michael gebilligt werden. Nur, weil er in letzter Zeit nicht im Fernsehen oder öffentlich auftrat, bedeutet das nicht, daß er nicht beschäftigt und aktiv war. Viele Leute haben darüber spekuliert, daß er sehr gestresst war wegen der Tour, aber ich denke nicht, daß er das war. Es war dieselbe Routine wie bei den vorherigen Touren. Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, ob es irgendwelche Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Michael und meinem Dad gab, und mir ist keine einzige eingefallen. Sie haben das Gegenteil gehört? Ich denke, daß das ihre Freundschaft erklärt. Sie hatten absolut nichts gemeinsam, aber wenn man sie zusammenbrachte, waren sie nicht mehr auseinander zu bringen. Er liebte meinen Dad, und sie verbrachten viele Tage zusammen in Dads Haus und in Neverland. Sie waren sich sehr nah. Michael war meinem Vater eine große Hilfe während der letzten paar Jahre seines Lebens.

Dafür werde ich für immer in seiner Schuld stehen. Dad konnte in seinen letzten Tagen schlecht atmen, und er war die meiste Zeit auf Sauerstoff angewiesen. Er liebte es, draußen zu sein, also lud Michael ihn nach Neverland ein. Dad kannte alle Bäume dort, und die Blumen, aber da er auf Sauerstoff angewiesen war, war es schwer für ihn, sie alle zu erreichen und zu sehen, es ist solch ein großes Gelände. Deshalb besorgte Michael ein Golf-Cart mit einem tragbaren Sauerstoff-Tank für Dad, so konnte er überall hingelangen und Neverland genießen. Sie fuhren einfach herum – Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando, mit einem Sauerstoff-Tank in einem Golf-Cart.

Einige der besten Zeiten, die ich mit Michael verbrachte, waren, auf einer Bank auf der Mainstreet von Disneyland zu sitzen. Wir saßen einfach dort und beobachteten die Leute. Manchmal war Michael verkleidet, er dachte, so würden die Leute ihn nicht erkennen – aber sie taten es immer. Wenn er schlecht gelaunt war oder ein bißchen down, sagte ich einfach “Michael, die Bank,”, und das heiterte ihn auf. Wenn ich wußte, daß er Spaß haben oder einfach weg wollte, sagte ich “gehen wir zur Bank”, und weg waren wir. Natürlich zog Michael Jackson an einem öffentlichen Platz wie Disneyland die Mengen an, deshalb hatten wir manchmal Sicherheitsleute des Parks dabei. Aber sie sollten nicht Michael dort schützen, sondern die Menge. Er war nie wirklich um sich selbst besorgt, sondern daß jemand von den Leuten, die ihn sehen wollten, verletzt würde. Die Leute spielten verrückt, wenn sie Michael Jackson sahen.

Michael weinte selten, aber ich denke, er würde über die Reaktionen zu seinem Tod Tränen vergießen. Er wäre überwältigt und glücklich, daß so viel von der Liebe, die er gab, von den Menschen, die er liebte, zurückkommt. Ich denke, er würde tief einatmen und einfach Danke sagen. Die Familie plant noch das Begräbnis, aber ich denke, Michael würde wollen, daß es ein Fest wird. Er würde alle dort haben wollen. Er liebte seine Fans. Ich kenne eine Menge große Filmstars, aber die Fans von Michael sind mehr als Fans. Er wußte, daß die Fans ihn zu dem gemacht hatten, was er war, und er würde niemanden außen vor lassen wollen. Überall, wohin er ging – die Fans waren da. Er sagte mir, daß die Fans immer wußten, was er tat. Ich denke nicht, daß irgendjemand jemals Fans wie diese gehabt hat. Deshalb würde Michael ein Begräbnis wollen, das seine Fans einschließt und sie glücklich macht. Er würde sagen wollen: “Ich bin immer noch bei euch, und wir werden immer zusammen sein”. Er war glücklich, und er wollte jedermann um ihn herum glücklich machen. Und schließlich würde er Liebe wollen.

Vor allem anderen war Michael Liebe.

Also die Sachen von Miko Brando lese ich immer gern. Er war so ein enger Freund über so viele Jahre und hat so viele Erinnerungen geteilt ohne sich damit in den Vordergrund zu drängen.
Es ist immer schön seine Worte zu hören, denn ihm kann man sicher vertrauen, daß er das was er sagt auch so ist und von tiefstem Herzen kommt.
Ich würde so gerne ein paar Anekdoten und Geschichten mit Michael hören, aber vielleicht ist es manchmal auch besser zu schweigen und das für sich zu behalten und nicht wie so viele Bücher darüber zu schreiben und alles zu offenbaren.

My Trip to Off The Wall - November 21, 2009



“Off the Wall” is a tiny shop on Melrose in Hollywood, California. I love vintage items and very much wanted to see where Michael Jackson shopped. It was rumored it was his favorite place to shop for vintage items and that he had named his album “Off the Wall” because he liked the name so much. As I walked into the store I immediately was taken by the beautiful, unusual and intriguing pieces surrounding me.

A friendly man behind the counter sitting at a computer greeted me and asked me if I was looking for anything in particular and having seen a few of the price tags I hesitantly told him, “Well, actually I am here to see where Michael Jackson shopped.” He smiled and pointed to three items on a shelf in the corner and said, “He purchased these three items just weeks before his death. He had been eyeing them for some time and finally had decided he wanted them on his last trip in. We were waiting for his manager to finish processing the payment when we learned he had passed away. That is how we do business. Most of the famous people who shop here will come in and point out something they like and then have the manager pay later.” Pointing again at the items on the shelf he said, “We now have them on display.” He explained they were wax forms used in medical school some where back east in the 1900s when cadavers were not available. I turned back to the shelf the body parts were simply fascinating to look at. The detail was incredible.

I looked closely at them and totally got why MJ purchased them. Many people labeled it as ‘weird’ but I felt I completely understood how they would aid with home schooling, having home schooled my own children for several years; I was always looking for teaching aids.

I had read that MJ was always buying books and educational items for his children. If the children asked a question he would stop and say “Let’s find out the answer.” He would then go to his library and retrieve a book to give them the correct answer to their question, and if it wasn’t there he would look for it somewhere else.
I studied the muscles and layers of skin and exposed bones and turned to the nice man behind the counter and excitedly said, “I totally get why he would want these!” He gave me a puzzled, bewildered look and said, “He just liked to buy unusual and weird stuff.” I smiled but felt I knew.

I slowly browsed through the store seeing many wonderful items which I would have loved to purchase myself. I was drawn to the back right corner opposite the corner which held Michael’s last medical school purchase. There was a small glass curio sitting snuggly in the corner and nesting on the top shelf were some amazing rare, vintage Disney items. I was just thinking that Michael may have seen these very items when Dennis, the owner of Off the Wall, approached and readily began talking about Michael saying over my shoulder, “Michael loved all things Disney. He was always intrigued by anything Disney we had in the store. We helped him furnish Neverland and made many trips out to Neverland with our truck delivering the items he purchased.” Later at home when I checked out a website Dennis had mentioned I realized at first with a sense of excitement and then deep loss that that same day I had stood in the very spot where Michael had been.

As I continued to look about the store I was delighted to have Dennis walk next to me and relate stories about Michael’s visits to the store. He smiled and said, “He first started coming here with his sister Janet when they were young, when Janet was in the show Good Times. Do you remember that TV show?” I smiled and said, “Yes, I sure do. She was so cute.” A look of fond memories came over his face as he continued, “Well they both would come in and shop. She would film right down the street and they would come in after she was done working or on her breaks. Sometimes Michael would drop by himself while he waited for her to finish.” Dennis continued, “He came here for years. Those were the less hectic times. Later he couldn’t go anywhere with out security and a crowd gathering around him.” Motioning to the entrance door and shaking his head from side to side he said “We would always know when he was here because there would suddenly be a huge crowd outside, just cameras, body guards, people everywhere in a swarm at the door and outside. It was sad. He just wanted to shop. He loved to shop but he couldn’t go anywhere with out a crowd.”

It is a tiny shop, maybe 20 feet by 30 feet, with the front door facing west and the warm afternoon sun filtered through the door and across the shop like a spot light, gently lighting up several beautiful vintage items. As he spoke I pictured the large crowd which inevitably swarmed around Michael loudly milling, clicking picture after picture, pushing and crowding the front door, chocking out the warm afternoon sun. I suddenly felt great pain for Michael. I could feel the tremendous love and admiration so many felt for Michael but looming larger I felt that frenzied, life squelching, paparazzi madness that followed Michael everywhere shutting out the light in his life.

Dennis continued to talk about the crowds, “It was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anyone else ever be treated that way.” I commented, “He was so dynamic. He had a magnetism that just drew people to him.” Dennis responded with a puzzled look, as if I just didn’t understand, shaking his head from side to side, “I have had many famous people in my shop and no one was ever treated the way Michael Jackson was.” Curious I queried, “Really who are some of the other famous people who have shopped here?” I have to confess he relayed names but for some reason my mind was so wrapped around the thought of Michael Jackson I don’t remember who he mentioned and there were several. However I do remember Dennis seemed visibly upset as he talked. I was able to focus on what he was saying again and heard him say at the end of his list “The Beatles. Even the Beatles never got the kind of attention he got. Both Ringo and George Harrison have shopped here at different times. George Harrison would drop in to shop here when he was in the states. You know someone would say “Hey, there’s George Harrison!” He was big star too and the response would be “Wow!” but they’d leave him alone… but with Michael people were everywhere.” He again shook his head sadly.

I was very intrigued and asked, “You saw him many times? You talked with him. What was it like to talk to him?” Dennis replied, “He was hard to sell things to. He always wanted a deal.” I laughed and said, “Well even stars like to work a deal.” He said, “Yes, he sure liked a deal. He never paid ticket price. It was hard to keep his attention. He would drift off and start looking at other things in the middle of a sale. He would loose interest and just walk away. He was quiet. He was shy so he didn’t really talk much. He was interested in looking around. He loved to shop.” I smiled to myself because I totally related. I do the very same thing when I am shopping especially for vintage items and antiques. I loose myself in those stores. You can feel the character and history in so many pieces and you just get pulled in. It’s a great escape.

Feeling sort of like a dweeb I shyly asked Dennis if I could take his picture. He very amiably agreed and plopped down on a very cool, cow hide bar stool from what looked to be the 50’s era and I snapped his picture. I continued to look around and asked him about a few of the beautiful pieces in the store. There was a 20’s era glass beaded purse that caught my eye and a gorgeous, round, bubbled glass table top which had been turned on its side. The light flowing through the door played with the glass and made it glow. He told me it was handmade and they had custom made the stand to show it off as an art piece. I then asked him about the name Off the Wall saying, “I heard Michael liked the name of your store so much he named his album Off the Wall too.” He gave me a wry smile and said, “Oh yeah, we asked him about that for years but he never would admit it. We’d go back and forth about it but he never would. Then a few years back he finally admitted that he liked our name and used it on his album.”

Dennis then slowly meandered out the front door with me and continued talking about Michael. As we left the front door he turned back toward the shop and pointed to an article taped in the window facing out to the street. There was a picture of Michael; it was the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine and a portion of the article referring to Off the Wall as Michael’s favorite antique shop, “He said you can read about us in the Rolling Stone article.” A reporter had come out to the store not long after Michael’s death and interviewed him. He pointed at it and also told me to check out You Tube saying, “On one of Michael’s last visits to the store the Channel 11 news crew did a news clip.”

I noticed Dennis now looked pensive and clearly wanted to make sure he finished our conversation by telling me about Michael’s beautiful children who had accompanied Michael on more than one occasion to the shop. He expressed with great admiration, “His children were just wonderful. They would come in to shop with him often. Very bright, asked a lot of questions and were very respectful, very intelligent children. He did a beautiful job raising them. You can tell what a child is like when you are in a living room setting and that was what it was like with them in the shop.” Nodding his head up and down saying a thoughtful and definitive, “Yes. Good children.” I thought about the paparazzi again and said, “Well hopefully they will be left alone and will not have to go through what their dad experienced.” Dennis responded, “Unfortunately they are in a fish bowl. It is really too bad. They are beautiful children. Very well raised, very considerate.” My heart sank as I sent up a silent prayer asking the Lord to protect each of them.

Dennis then detailed the story of Michael’s last purchase for me, “You know he bought the body parts just a few weeks before he passed away. He would just point out something and say he wanted to buy it and then leave. It would be delivered later. He had his eye on the body parts. He had been in several times and this time made up his mind to buy them. You know, they are real wax teaching tools from a 1900’s medical school. If they couldn’t get their hands on a cadaver they could learn from the wax body parts.”

Then he motioned and pointed from the door to the street where Michael’s assistant walked out of the shop one day with a purchase saying, “One time he was in and bought a big, shiny, silver airplane and his body guard carried it out to the car.” I asked him if it was for his children, and he shrugged and said “I don’t know why he bought it. He just liked it. It caught his eye. He would just buy different and unusual things. We helped stock Neverland with many, many items over the years. He would shop and then we would drive out and deliver them to him there.”

I thanked him for his time feeling in my own way a small sense of closeness to the King of Pop. A deep sadness filled my heart as I pulled out of the Off the Wall drive-way on to Melrose to make my drive home. I turned my music up loud and listened to Michael Jackson’s beautiful voice with the perfect pitch and incredible range. His gorgeous smile, kind eyes and his electrified dancing image moved across my mind. His deep love of art, history and beauty shared and indelibly etched yet deeper into my heart.

I don't tell this story too often, in fact growing up I kinda learned to just keep it to myself.

Whenever people would find out I knew him, a gang of silly, dumb questions would follow, and I would always end up having to defend someone I loved so much.

When I was 5, my cousin Brian and I where OBSESSED with Micheal Jackson. We had dolls, sleeping bags, lunch boxes, and OF COURSE the gloves. I was pretty convinced I was goin to be him when I grew up, and nobody could tell me otherwise! Brian was older then me, and found out at school MJ actually lived in the Valley, we lived in. Anyone from LA pretty much knew the house. So we wrote him letters and enclosed a bunch of pics, you remember the ones from school you'd write on the bk, yeah well, lucky Micheal got about 25 of me!! Basically we told him we LOVED him & I told him I was a singer and dancer!!! We also asked him to come to our house & visit!! Our loca tia Carol (RIP) took us to his house and we rang the gaurd gate. His gaurd came out to us & took our letters. WE WERE SOOOOOOO HAPPY, we KNEW he would get em!! I honestly can say we were just happy enough to see his gate & meet his gaurd NEVER did we really expect what happened next.

About 4 days later, at 10:30 pm, my mom got the call from Carol, Michael Jackson was HERE, in our APT building, on her couch. I was 5 & anybody who knows a 5 year old also knows that it's damn near impossible to wake em up!! The pic you see of us is him holding me, cause I wouldn't wake up, he insisted my parents take da pic so I would truly know he came!! A few days later I was going into the hospital for sugery & he called me. I couldn't BELIEVE I was talking to Micheal Jackson & that he actually had my number!! Over the next few years he would invite Brian & I to his house, to watch him shot his videos & to his shows.

It's weird, when I was lil, I didn't really grasp FAME, especially his FAME. All I knew was he was my friend & I think thats why he liked me. My friendship with him changed my life. It was a HUGE influence, it made me believe having a singer career was in arms reach. My neighborhood didn't support BIG DREAMS but his freindship gave me confidence & assurance that ANYTHING & EVERYTHING is possible, if you work hard & aren't scared to try. His generousity & kindness inspires me daily. Here was the biggest super star in the world taking time out to come to a broken down apt building in Van Nuys CA to see his fans. He was ALWAYS about his fans & his community, and I really always knew that if I got my chance I would strive to be just like that!!

Even as a tiny lil girl I could see his saddness & his lonely. It was a part of him, I think his childhood, fame & money alienated him from most of the world. Thats why he loved US cause we didnt care about the BS!! We just had fun!! He was so goofy & silly, we would jump on his trampoline and raid his candy shop.

Micheal was like Edward Scissorhands & Willy Wonka to me, SOOOOO AMAZING in the HEART but so misunderstood by most! I love him always for touching my life & showing me a different world then the one I grew up in.

I hope those babies of his really grow up understanding that they did have the best daddy in the world. His heart & sprirt are what made him the GREATEST and so RARE.

One day I'll post more pics, and tell ya specific stories!! All the good things ya heard about him were ALL TRUE!! I promise!!

This photo was taken on one of the VERY BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE!!! Michael called me, after a sugery I had & invited me to the set of his video for "The Way You Make Me Feel". Here's what stood out about the day, the biggest super-star in the world made me feel like the super-star. In the middle of all his hectic-ness he would come see me, take pics with me & make sure I was good between takes!! At 5 yrs old I sat & watched him shoot, take after take in this warehouse in San Pedro CA. He introduced me to everyone, his sister Latoya was there, his co-star, that beautiful girl he was SO shy to kiss Tatianna. Even at that young age I was very aware of how gracious & kind he was with EVERYONE on set. Looking back now I remember he was sooooo excited that all of the extras were real ex bloods, crips, gang members from LA. I remember him being so excited about giving them a chance to shine & a new opportunity. We sat in his trailor, I remember telling him I wanted to be a singer when I grew up & gave him pics of me from my dance recital. I remember eating w him & him being the very first vegetarian I had ever met! I was like u don't eat meat??? I was so confused!! Lol. Man writing this, thinking about this day & all the rest of the times I spent w him makes me smile!! As a lil girl I never really grasped how famous he was, honestly I think that's why he loved hanging out w me! To me & all the other kids, he was just a fun, crazy, silly guy, who sang our most favorite songs. I love him for being the most honest, pure heart I have ever known for showin me video shoots, recording studios, & concerts, up close and personal, making my dream seem possible. I was there in it, seeing it happen, he brought me into a world I would have never known existed without him. A lil girl from Van Nuys CA. I can't even begin to count the ways he changed my life. He helped create my dream. Records like Homegirlz & Sadgirl I know he would be proud of, he was always ALWAYS about giving back!! I miss him everyday & can't believe he is gone.

Ich erzähle diese Geschichte nicht allzu oft, tatsächlich lernte ich irgendwie, als ich heranwuchs, sie für mich zu behalten. Jedes Mal, wenn die Leute herausfanden, dass ich ihn kannte, stellten sie mir eine Reihe dummer, blöder Fragen, was jedes Mal damit endete, dass ich jemanden, den ich so sehr liebte, verteidigen musste.
Als ich fünf Jahre alt war, waren meine Cousin Brian und ich besessen von Michael Jackson. Wir besaßen Puppen, Schlafsäcke, Lunchboxen und natürlich Glitzerhandschuhe. Ich war ziemlich überzeugt davon, dass ich, wenn ich erwachsen wäre, so sein würde wie er und ich ließ mir auch von niemandem etwas anderes erzählen! Brian war älter als ich und er fand in der Schule heraus, dass MJ im gleichen Tal lebte wie wir.
Jeder in LA kannte das Haus. Also schrieben wir ihm Briefe und legten jede Menge Fotos von uns bei, es waren welche, die wir in der Schule bekamen, solche, bei denen man etwas auf die Rückseite schreiben konnte und Michael, der Glückliche, bekam so etwa 25 Stück von mir! Wir schrieben ihm vor allem, dass wir ihn LIEBEN und ich schrieb ihm, dass ich Sängerin und Tänzerin bin!!! Wir baten ihn auch, zu uns nachhause zu kommen und uns dort zu besuchen. Carol, unsere (anmerkung blissy: das wort ist leider falsch geschrieben und ich konnte einfach nicht herausfinden, wer oder was die gute Carol war) (RIP) brachte uns zu seinem Haus und wir läuteten am Tor der Wachen. Seine Wachleute kamen heraus und nahmen unsere Briefe entgegen. Wir waren soooooooooooooo glücklich, wir wüssten, er würde sie bekommen!!!! Ehrlich gesagt, waren wir schon überglücklich, dass wir das Tor sehen und seine Wachleute treffen konnten, wir haben wirklich nicht erwartet, was noch weiter geschehen würde.
Nach etwa vier Tagen gegen 10:30 Uhr abends bekam meine Mutter einen Anruf von Carol. Michael Jackson war DA, in unserem Apartment, auf ihrer Couch. Ich war fünf und jeder, der eine Fünfjährige kennt, weiß wie verdammt es schwer ist, sie aufzuwecken!! Auf dem Foto seht ihr, wie er mich in seinen Armen hält, weil ich nämlich nicht wach werden wollte, bestand er darauf, dass meine Eltern das Foto machten, so dass ich auch wirklich wusste, dass er gekommen war!!! Ein paar Tage später ging ich wegen einer Operation ins Krankenhaus und er rief mich an. Ich konnte nicht glauben, dass ich mit Michael Jackson sprach und dass er tatsächlich meine Nummer hatte. Die nächsten Jahre hindurch lud er Brian und mich zu sich nachhause ein, um uns seine Videos anzuschauen und er lud uns auch zu seinen Shows ein.
Es ist verrückt, als ich klein war, begriff ich den Ausdruck RUHM nicht wirklich, vor allem seinen RUHM nicht. Alles, was ich wusste war, dass er mein Freund war und ich glaube, deshalb mochte er mich. Meine Freundschaft zu ihm veränderte mein Leben. Sie hatte einen großen Einfluss, sie ließ mich glauben, dass eine Karriere als Sängerin in greifbarer Nähe sei. In meiner Nachbarschaft wurden große Träume nicht sonderlich unterstützt, doch seine Freundschaft gab mir das Vertrauen und die Sicherheit, dass alles möglich ist, wenn du hart arbeitest und keine Angst davor hast, es zu versuchen. Seine Großzügigkeit und Liebenswürdigkeit inspirieren mich täglich. Da war der größte Superstar der Welt, der sich die Zeit nahm zu einer verfallenen Wohnung in Van Nuys in Kalifornien zu kommen, um seine Fans zu sehen. Es ging ihm immer um seine Fans, um die Gemeinschaft und ich wusste wirklich immer, dass ich, wenn ich die Chance dazu bekäme, danach streben würde, genauso zu sein.
Selbst als kleines Mädchen sah ich seine Traurigkeit und Einsamkeit. Sie waren ein Teil von ihm. Ich glaube, seine Kindheit, sein Ruhm und sein Geld entfremdeten ihn vom Rest der Welt. Deswegen liebte er UNS, weil uns dieser Mist nicht interessierte. Wir hatten einfach Spaß. Er war so albern, wir sprangen zusammen auf seinem Trampolin und überfielen seinen Süßwarenladen.
Für mich war Michael wie Edward mit den Scherenhänden und Willy Wonka, er hatte ein soooooooooooo wunderbares Herz und wurde von den meisten missverstanden. Ich liebe ihn auf ewig, weil er mein Herz berührte und mir eine andere Welt zeigte als die, in der ich aufgewachsen bin.
Ich hoffe, dass seine Kinder wahrhaftig in dem Wissen aufwachsen, dass sie den besten Daddy der Welt hatten. Sein Herz und seine Seele machten ihn zum GRÖSSTEN und zu etwas derart Kostbarem.
Eines Tages werde ich euch mehr Bilder posten und euch besondere Geschichten erzählen. Alles Gute, was ihr über ihn gehört habt, ist wahr, das verspreche ich!!!

Erinnerung an meine Zeit......


Dieses Foto wurde an einem der besten Tage meines Lebens aufgenommen. Michael rief mich an, nach dem ich eine OP hatte, und lud mich zum Dreh seines Videos The way you make me feel ein. Das Beste von diesem Tag war, dass der größte Superstar der Welt machte, dass ich mich als Superstar fühlte! Mitten in all seiner Hektik kam er, um mich zu sehen, machte mit mir Fotos, und sah zu, dass es mir gut ging zwischen den Aufnahmen!! Mit 5 Jahren sass ich da und sah, wie er filmte, mitten in dieser Lagerhalle in San Pedro CA. Er stellte mich jedem vor, seine Schwester La Toya war da, sein Co-Star, dieses hübsche Mädchen, und er war so schüchtern Tatiana zu küssen. Auch mit diesem jungen Alter war mir sehr bewusst, wie liebenswürdig und freundlich er zu jedem am Set war. Rückblickend erinnere ich mich daran, dass er sooo aufgeregt war, dass all die Komoparsen "echt" waren, "crips", Gang Mitglieder aus LA. Ich erinnere mich daran, wie aufgeregt er darüber war, ihnen eine Chance zu geben, zu glänzen mit dieser neuen Rolle. Wir sassen in seinemTrailer, ich erinnere mich, dass ich ihm erzählte, ich möchte Sängerin werden, wenn ich groß bin, und dass ich ihm Bilder von einer Tanzaufführung gab. Ich erinnere mich daran, mit ihm gegessen zu haben, und dass er der erste Vegetarier war, den ich je getroffen hatte. "Was, du isst kein Fleisch"?..Ich war ganz verwirrt..lol.. Mann, während ich das schreibe und über diesen Tag nachdenke und über all die Zeit, die ich mit ihm verbrachte, bringt mich das zum lächeln. Als Mädchen war mir nie wirklich bewußt, wie berühmt er war, ich glaube, deshalb mochte er es auch, mit mir zusammen zusein. Für mich und all die anderen Kids war es einfach ein lustiger, verrückter und alberner Typ, der unsere Lieblingslieder sang. Ich liebe ihn dafür, das aufrechteste, reinste Herz zu haben, was ich je wahrnahm, dafür, dass er mir den Video Dreh zeigte, das Aufnahme Studio, Konzerte, er ganz persönlich machte, dass mein Traum möglich schien. Ich war dabei und sah, wie es geschah, er zeigte mir eine Welt, von der ich ohne ihn nicht gewusst hätte, dass sie existiert. Ein kleines Mädchen aus Van Nuys CA. Ich kann garnicht sagen, auf wievele Arten er mein Leben veränderte. Er half mir, meinen Traum zu schaffen. Platten wie Homegirlz & Sadgirl, ich weiß, da wäre er stolz drauf, ihm ging es immer, immer darum,.etwas zurückzugeben. Ich vermisse ihn jeden Tag und kann nicht glauben, dass er gegangen ist.
