"I met Michael on the first day of rehearsal, and I was stunned — even though, obviously, I knew his image very well — at how incredibly sweet and how modest and how innocent he was. And fragile too. In person you felt he was almost breakable. But then this thing happened when he would start to work: your heart would beat faster and the hair on your arms and the back of your neck would stick up as he literally took your breath away. I think he was the most electrifying performer I've ever seen.
I think it was very hard for Michael to express anger. He was, I have to say, one of the most polite people I have ever met in my life. I never heard Michael say a swear word, even when he was upset. He had the most beautiful manners. And I think music was really the only way in which his passion could come through unguarded. It was immense. He was on fire as a performer — I've never seen a talent like it. I think, actually, there was a lot of the otherworldly in Michael. He had this talent that I've never encountered before, and I've seen a lot of extraordinary people perform. He was, I think, very misunderstood. I never believed any of the allegations or insinuations against him. We had lunch together about a month ago, and he talked about his ordeal. He felt like he had really been put through the ringer. He said they wanted blood. I felt so bad for him, and I felt that he was really broken-hearted from what had been done. Meine liebevollste Erinnerung an MJ ist, als meine Mutter sehr krank wurde und auf der Intensivstation lag.
Wir performten in Sydney, Australien. Bei dem Auftritt am Abend des Tages, an dem ich herausfand, daß sie krank war, zog MJ mich nach unserem Gebetskreis zur Seite. Er schloß sich uns immer an beim Gebetskreis. Er dankte mir dafür, daß ich an der Show dieses Abends teilnahm, obwohl ich mich so um meine Mutter sorgte. Und er versicherte mir, er würde dafür sorgen, daß ich so schnell wie möglich nach Hause gelangen würde.
Ich flog am anderen Morgen. Und am nächsten Tag wurden Blumen für meine Mutter ins Krankenhaus gebracht - von Michael Jackson. Ich stehe treu zu ihm bis zum heutigen Tag wegen seiner Freundlichkeit.

Was ich am meisten an ihm vermissen werde, ist die Dynamik seiner Kreativität. In seiner Nähe zu sein, war elektrisierend! Es war aufregend, ein Teil dieser Show zu sein.

'Michael was truly the greatest performer. When he hit that zone, no one could touch him. I remember him doing three shows in a row and Justin Timberlake was supposed to join him onstage, but when Justin came out, he just froze and Michael was poppin’! Awesome! He didn’t need the special effects or anything else; he was the real performer.

And you could see him going into that spiritual zone backstage when he was getting ready for a show. He was always calm, relaxed, smooth. He would do his own makeup and take a few minutes alone in his dressing room where he had a picture of The Three Stooges that he liked on the wall. Then he would very calmly emerge and just blow the audience away. Even in Japan on his comeback tour when he was a little nervous about how people felt about him then, he always had the utmost professionalism and was always on time, and again, just blew them away.

I’ve had the opportunity to talk with people like Nelson Mandela and Oprah Winfrey, but the relationship with Michael was very special. Every time I left him, I’d be sad seeing him standing on the porch waving good-bye. He was always so welcoming, so hospitable. He was never about selfishness or harming anyone. He was always about trying to be closer to God, to be Christ-like. He loved more than he was loved and was always trying to get closer to God, to do the right thing even though it wasn’t always what he wanted to do. And whenever he was tested, he looked for his strength within, from bringing God into his body and putting him first in his life. Michael was really very spiritual and put God in control of his life. He was truly blessed by God.

Japan has more orphanages than any place in the world and Michael wanted to do something for them while he was there so we picked one to visit that just so happened to be supported by Bill and Melinda Gates. Michael would arrive with no publicity and with multiple toys for each child. His own kids would go with him and he would be educating them as to what was going on. The kids were delighted, but Michael would also take the time to personally shake the hands of each of the nuns at the orphanage thanking each of them for taking care of the children.

And people just melted around him. One time when he was taking his kids to Disneyland, word had gotten out that he was coming and everyone knew his favorite ride was Peter Pan, so there was gridlock by the time he arrived. But he just held his hands up and the crowd opened up like parting the Red Sea. Then he would watch the parade from the Main Street rooftop and eat hot dogs and French fries with his kids. I thank God everyday that I was graced by this angel and am reminded even more so that we can’t take our time here for granted. There is no tomorrow promised and you’ve gotta let people know you love them. That’s what Michael was about.—Qadree El-Amin, Southpaw Entertainment

Marlo Henderson


Marlo Henderson spielte Gitarre auf Michaels Off The all und History Album (und arbeitete auch bei einigen J5 Alben mit)

Marlo brauchte ein Foto für seinen Lebenslauf (?) und er fragte imStudio um Erlaubnis, er ging dann zu Studio wo gerade Thriller abgemischt wurde, und er fand Michael schlafend, weil er die ganze Nacht auf war. Er schüttelte ihn und weckte ihn auf, um ihn wegen den Fotos zu fragen. Michael war nett aber sagte"was (ist los)?" Er wollte nicht aufwachen! Trotzdem kam er irgendwann und machte das Foto und ging dann wieder schlafen. Auf dem Bild, sagt Marlo, sieht Michael mich an als wolle er sagen "Ich kann nicht glauben, dass dieser Kerl mich tatsächlich geweckt hat, um ein Foto zu machen." aber er posierte für das Foto, mit seiner "Bett-Frisur". Marlo erinnert sich, Michael war sehr heikel damit.
Marlo, der neben Michael wohnte, traf Michael 1971 und auch bei einer Autowaschanlage in die Michael in Encino jede Woche fuhr. Sie trafen sich monatelang jeden Donnerstag um 2 Uhr um sich im Donut Shop zu unterhalten, während ihre Autos gewaschen wurden. Marlo erinnert sich an Michael als bescheiden, ernsthaft, als jemand, der Grenzen durchbrechen wollte, neugierig und als ein Spassvogel. Er mag dieses Foto, weil es so selten ist.

'WIZ' PRODUCER RECALLS JACKSON'S SENSITIVITY

Film director Rob Cohen met Michael Jackson in New York in 1978 while producing "The Wiz," the film version of an all-black Broadway production of "The Wizard of Oz" starring Diana Ross.

He was such a sensitive guy that when we would go out to dinner -- he was a vegetarian -- he would apologize to each vegetable before he ate it. He ordered steamed vegetables and he literally would say, "I'm sorry, Mr. Carrot" and "I'm sorry, Mr. Broccoli." He was so empathetic to other people and all living things -- that's really what I remember most about Michael, even more than his dancing and singing. When you talked to Michael, you really felt he was feeling what you were feeling.

I remember one night doing a recording session for "Ease On Down the Road," and Quincy [Jones] was in the studio laying down the tracks. Michael was there with Diana, and Diana was singing her part, and then it was like "OK, Michael, let's bring in your part." Michael did a riff from "Ease on Down the Road" in that sweet angelic voice, and Quincy's eyes just lit up -- I'll never forget it. It was like watching a leopard looking at a goat. Quincy was just like, "What?" And from that moment on, those two were united, and soon they went on to do "Off The Wall" together and then "Thriller," and it was all started there in that moment.

He loved New York City. We got him and La Toya an apartment on Central Park West and sometimes I'd pick him up or drop him off and I'd always notice tons of crates of Perrier water.

I said, finally, "Michael, what's with all the Perrier?" And he said, "I like to bathe in it. I like the bubbles." Every once in a while I'd get him to come out with me to Studio 54 on a weekend night, and we'd always go with a big group of fashion models and he would get out there and dance and just ignite the place. He already had those moves, you know? He didn't just invent them for his videos. He didn't go as far with it back then, but he did the spins and the moonwalk, a little Fosse, a little Astaire.

He had no idea the effect he already had on people. We'd get back in the limo with him at the end of the night and I'd say, "Michael, you know you could go home with this girl, or you could go home with that girl. Why don't you take some of these girls home with you?" And he'd say, "Really, you really think they like me?"

Zurück zur Thriller Ära
Michael und sein Familienfreund Majestic hingen zusammen in Hayvenhurst herum. Majestic redete mit Michael, als er realisierte, dass Michael nicht länger neben ihm war. er lehnte sich herunter, schaute auf die Erde und weinte. Er sagte: 'Michael, was machst Du ?' Michael antwortete in Tränen: 'Schau auf diesen Babyvogel und er ist tot.' 'Michael, es ist nur ein Vogel. Es gibt nichts, was du für ihn tun kannst. Komm lass uns gehen.' 'Majestic, dies war ein lebendes Wesen mit einem Herzen und einer Seele, genau wie wir. Wir müssen etwas tun !'
Majestic realisierte, dass Michael schon auf dem Boden kniete und mit seinen bloßen Händen ein Loch grub, während er sagte: 'Wir müssen diesen Vogel beerdigen. Wir müssen einfach! Und wir müssen ein Gebet für diesen Vogel sprechen!' Er beendete, das Loch zu graben, legte den Vogel hinein und bedeckte ihn. Dann stand er auf und bestand darauf, dass Majestic sich direkt neben ihn an das neue Grab stellte und zusammen sprachen sie ein Gebet. Michael führte in ein Gebet und bat Gott, den Babyvogel zu segnen und ihn in den Himmel aufzunehmen.

Sie waren mit dem Gebet fertig und Majestic versuchte wieder Michael anzutreiben: 'Los, komm, wir sind fertig.' Aber Michael war weiterhin gefesselt und ignorierte sein Gesuch(?). Stattdessen schaute er nach oben und realisierte, dass der Vogel von einem nahegelegenen Baum in seinen Tod gefallen ist. Plötzlich stieg er den Baum hinauf. Er kletterte zu der Stelle des Vogelnestes im Baum und er befestigte sorgfältig das Nest, damit kein Babyvogel mehr herausfallen und sterben konnte. Dann kletterte er herunter. Er bürstete sich selber ab und setzte seinen Weg mit Majestic zum Studio fort um zu arbeiten.

Meine Erfahrung mit seinem Umgang mit Kindern ist, dass er selbstlos in jedem Fall in und jedem einzelnen Kind geholfen hat, dass ich zu ihm schickte. In einem Fall lud er einen Zirkus ein für die Kinder mit Down Syndrom aus der Klasse eines Freundes meiner Tochter. In einer kindlichen Begeisterung sah er sich die Show mit ihnen an. Dieses kleine Mädchen glaubte, sie wäre Michaels zukünftige Frau und er erlaubte ihr freundlich neben ihm zu sitzen als seine zukünftige Braut.

Seine Federn mögen ernsthaft verbrannt sein und er mag auf andere Art beschädigt sein, aber er ist so etwas wie ein Engel. (Pete Townsend, the who)

Michael ist ein sehr spezieller Mann. Er kam herein zu seiner Stunde setzte sich und betete (für gewöhnlich). Dann las er aus der Bibel, betete noch einmal und begann zu arbeiten. Kannst du dir einen performer so groß wie Michael Jackson vorstellen, der sich in einer Stunde umdreht und mit dir diskutiert, wie wunderbar Gott zu ihm gewesen ist und wie sehr er Gott liebt?
Es gab einen Moment ... Ich spielte das Klavier und ich stand neben ihm. Ganz plötzlich streckte er seine Hände aus und sah nach oben. Es schien mir, dass es sehr wichtig für ihn war. In case you missed last month’s 16, in which I told you my impressions of brothers Jermaine, Marlon and Randy, this time I’m about to reveal all about mischievous Michael, my 14-year-old brother, known to most of you as a “superstar.” To me, however, he’s a teasing, always outgoing and friendly but sometimes bothersome, little brother-whom I love and admire a lot (but I don’t usually admit that to him!) Michael can charm the fuzz off a peach-he can talk to anyone and make him or her feel at ease and instantly like an old friend! I guess you could say that Michael has “charisma”-that enviable quality of leadership that makes some politicians and entertainers so unforgettable and dynamic. He’s not at all shy like some of my other brothers, but Mike is generally quite tactful. "The last time I spoke to my friend Michael Jackson was about a month ago, 3 weeks before his shocking death. He had called me late one night to ask about another of my close friends who he had read about in the news. Since then, they have been imprisoned, had very little contact with their families or western officials, and endured a secretive trial at which they were sentenced to twelve years hard labor. At this present moment, it is unclear where Laura and Euna are – whether they remain in a government guesthouse where they were originally held, in a hospital (due to medical problems for both of them), or moved to the infamous North Korean labor camps that many do not survive.

Michael had read some of the details regarding Laura and Euna’s predicament. As was often the case with him and global events he read about – from famine in Africa to victims of natural disasters in far off countries, to orphans created by wars – he felt a deep sense of empathy for Laura and Euna. When I shared with him that Euna had a four-year-old daughter, he was even more anguished.

He asked me whether I had had any contact with Laura. I told him I had written her a few letters and had been assured they were getting through. Outside of that, her own family had only heard from her twice – brief monitored phonecalls – in the over three months they had been imprisoned. When I told him that, Michael paused.

“Do you think,” he said hesitantly, “that the leader of North Korea could be a fan of mine?”

I didn’t really know how to respond. Not much is known about the reclusive Kim Jong Il or “Dear leader” as he is called in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Over the years it’s been alleged he has a thing for Hollywood, certain NBA stars, Elvis, and specific liqueurs. Still, I’d never heard about any connection between Michael Jackson and Kim Jong Il.

Michael said he had seen some pictures on the internet of the Dear Leader. “You know, he wears jackets like mine.”

I couldn’t help but laugh a little. It’s true. Michael always had a fascination with military-like jackets, the types with markers and badges on the collars and shoulders. If you search it online, you will indeed find a lot of images of Michael and Kim Jong Il, similarly bedecked in analogous outfits.

“I don’t really know,” I answered Michael. “But I can try and find out.”

“Please,” Michael responded without hesitantly, “because maybe if he was a fan, I could help get those girls home.”

I explained to Michael that there were larger geo-politics involved, nuclear programs, a new administration trying to assert its foreign policy strategy (Obama), and another one in NK possibly going through some sort of transference of power.

“Yeah,” Michael said wistfully, “but if someone wants to do something good, they just can. They don’t really need to worry about all that other stuff.”

And that was really the end of that conversation. I kept my promise and tried to see if I might find a connection between MJ and KJI, but sadly I wasn’t able to. Before I was able to get back to Michael, the news regarding his tragic passing broke. The tributes and commemoratives began in earnest and have not stopped.

Then the irony occurred to me, the far out bizarre seemingly impossible possibility: there is really only one person in the world today that could make a truly meaningful tribute to Michael Jackson. If indeed Kim Jong Il ever was a fan of Michael Jackson, ever gasped at Michael’s moonwalk, smiled at Thriller, hummed along to the Jackson Five or any of Michael’s countess hits, his pardoning of Laura Ling and Euna Lee and sending them home to their families would be a profound act of compassion, a true tribute to a man whose death has left the entire world in mourning. What a better way to re-invent himself and his own conflicted image than for Kim Jong Il to send a message of hope, forgiveness, and empathy as a commemoration of possibly the greatest icon of our times. It’s an act that would be historic, covered by every news organizations in the world, and be immortalized in the annals of time.

Alas, maybe I’m naïve to have such dramatic hopes for my friend and her colleague, to think that leaders of nations may be influenced by the dying wishes of great artists. Or…maybe not. To me, Michael’s memory will always be as a great friend and mentor. To many around the world, it will be as an iconic and brilliant musical artist. Wouldn’t it be staggering if one Kim Jong Il were to honor him – post-death – as a truly great humanitarian?"
